I posted a picture of one of the bands I saw last night to my Facebook. My friend asked if it was a hippie commune. No… just a folk metal band from Norway. Yes, folk metal is a thing and it’s just as ridiculous as what you’re probably imagining in your head.

The opener was Trollfest and when they got on stage, I saw the most mismatched group of people ever. You had the main guy who looked like a mad scientist with a hawaiian shirt on, then there was the indie rocker with the accordion, the metal-head guitarist, the hippie dancer/auxiliary percussionist.. that’s just half the band. The crowd seemed to match the band. There were your typical metalheads, your indie rockers, a couple of bros and some black metal fans. No one cared what band you were representing on your t-shirt, no one cared if you had a studded belt on or not. As long as you were having fun, you fit in.

You couldn’t help but have fun with Trollfest on the stage. They got the crowd jumping and clapping just like any opener should do. At one point they had the whole crowd bouncing up and down like the lollipop guild. There was more hair flying in the pit than fists and legs which was actually a refreshing change. At one point, one of the guitarists decided to come on down into the pit while still playing. He would get up in peoples faces and start screaming in your face to get you moving. The other guitarist decided that he would try to do trust falls into the crowd over the barricades. Yes, you heard me right, trust falls.. when you just fall backwards and hope to god someone catches you. (He was caught every time)

As if all of this was not enough, the band broke into a very demented cover of Britney Spear’s Toxic. It was complete with screaming and dancing. You had the hippie auxiliary percussionist shaking his booty and twerking it while the other guys hit notes higher than I ever could. The stage looked like a hot mess but it was the best and most entertaining hot mess I had seen in awhile.

I will say that it sucks when an opener is THAT entertaining. It really took away from the two headlining acts. The energy just wasn’t the same the rest of the night. So note to bands,,, don’t take yourself too seriously. I love the bands that joke around on stage and that seem like they are genuinely having a good time. That’s what this is all about right? Having a good time.
