I’m on a roll tonight and there’s no stopping me so why waste any time? Let’s jump right into Jumping Ship’s new EP, ‘Good Grief’!

“Attic” kicks this EP off in a very simple yet striking way. An echoed guitar part starts this track before emotionally drenched vocals come in and catapult this opening track into something so raw and so powerful. I found myself instantly struck by the impossible weight and undeniable power of this track. Although the instrumentation definitely takes a backseat to the heart-on-your-sleeve-styled words, there’s so much power with every drum hit and every guitar strum creating a perfect opening track that absolutely drags you into Jumping Ship’s world. The track quickly crescendos into something that left me speechless. What I can say is this is one hell of a way to kick off an EP and Jumping Ship absolutely had my attention.

I lost myself in a cloud of nostalgia as “Sooner or Later” took over my house. There’s angst, power, energy, and, again, Jumping Ship’s signature vocal style in this second track. Although I won’t shy away from saying there’s something nostalgic about this band’s sound, I also won’t shy away from saying there’s something fresh about their take of this style. There are intricate guitar parts scattered throughout this track that add a technical detail to an overall emotionally charged track and I love the way that neither of these elements seem to fight with the other. They live in harmony and that’s something that absolutely sets Jumping Ship apart from the rest of the bands in this emo/ pop-punk revival scene that they fit so perfectly in.

“Twilight Town” was an instant favorite of mine. It takes that nostalgic angst felt in “Sooner or Later” and tones it down ever so slightly to give the emotionally drenched words a chance to shine in the spotlight. I really wish I had lyrics to read along to while listening to this album because I know that would just be the icing on the cake but sadly I couldn’t find the words. Regardless, the few phrases I caught in “Twilight Town” hit me like a punch to the gut. This is seriously such a great track and one that I’m sure my coworkers will be sick of in no time after I have it playing on repeat for the foreseeable future.

Jumping Ship has such a distinct sound and style so I wasn’t surprised when “Darker Colors” was more of the same powerful instrumentation mixed with weighted words. Some people may think this repetitive nature is a bad thing but I love it because it shows that this band is so confident with their sound and style. Why change a good thing? “Darker Colors” just continued to make this band an instant favorite of mine and I honestly took the time during this track to just appreciate how flawless this band is through and through.

Just when I thought I had this band pegged, they threw “Lying to Myself” into the mix. although the vocals had been highlighted throughout the previous four tracks, they really come to the spotlight during this more acoustic-based track. All of the bands back in the day had a track like this. It’s the track you sit in your car and cry to before walking into the house and although I wasn’t in my car just having a moment, I found my eyes welling up with tears as I listened to the words that cut right to my heart. Mental health is something that music helps me with and I love the way that Jumping Ship addresses mental health head-on with this song. “When did I get so good at fucking up my life?” “I just keep doing things I know’s not fair to me like cheating in solitaire, lying in therapy.” I mean, do I need to say anything more?

The title of the final track, “Good Luck Have Fun” is just absolutely perfect for an ending track but, beyond that, so is this track overall. Again, bringing the vocal power and overall intensity that Jumping Ship brings to the table back to the forefront, I loved that this energetic and angsty track followed the tenderness that was “Lying To Myself” as if being a sign of resilience. This is just such a stunning EP and, although I never wanted it to end, I was glad it ended on such a strong and flawless note.
