I love bands with a gimmick or storyline and the one that Rat Hole brought to me in conjunction with their song “When We’re Famous” instantly had me sold. “After being fired from every band they’ve even been in for their unacceptable antics, Johnny Sideways and Dr Smackpot formed Rat Hole as a vehicle to express their rock n roll.” Okay, they had me at “Johnny Sideways” and “Dr. Smackpot” because everyone knows a band is better when you have nicknames but also the danger that comes with knowing that the members of this band have been fired from every other band they’ve been in had me intrigued. I don’t know if the stories about Johnny Sideways and Dr. Smackpot are true but I know their single “When We’re Famous” is absolutely perfect.
This song is brash, angsty, full of live, and full of attitude. Call it piss and vinegar, call it DIY styled anger, it’s perfect to me and, surely, to some of you. I’ll admit, the recording quality is rough at best but that just adds to the charm of the raw energy behind this song. As the band puts it, “all [our] tracks are recorded as live takes with 0 added production, on microphones [they] stole out of somebody’s car boot when they were 18”. Think The Chats but with a bit more grit and more “unacceptable antics” and you get close to Rat Hole’s sound but, really, nothing else out there sounds like this band. Rat Hole is an original act with an original sound and, well, again, the the words of the great Rat Hole, “If you hate them, you’re not the only one”.
