Saying no is not a strong suit of mine. I’m a perpetual “yes person” where I say yes to nearly everything. Although this leads to amazing experiences, it also leads to perpetual exhaustion and constant stress. None of this has to do with Playing Dead’s new song “You Can’t Say No” other than the title but I hope this was enough of an intro to snag your attention.
“You Can’t Say No” has a very Saves The Day styled intro before moving into a more Jimmy Eat World anthemic vibe. It’s a pop-punk leaning power-pop track at it’s core but has a sprinkle of indie-pop in there and a slight angsty edge that keeps the three and a half minute song feeling full of life and fresh. There’s a sweetness in the vocal delivery of Playing Dead that I found perfectly infectious making this song a perfect pick-me-up song for an early Thursday morning. It’s full of life but not abrasive and I love that about this track. I wish I had more to say about this song but “You Can’t Say No” from Playing Dead is just one of those songs that, when you hear it, you know you’re listening to straight gold.
