I speculated over what “J.A.F.A” may stand for. I didn’t get far because, honestly, I couldn’t think of many words that started with a “J” and kept on getting stuck on “Jafar” (you know, as in Aladdin) but, when I pushed play on this track from Austrailian-based Capricore, I didn’t care what it stood for– I just knew that I loved this track and wanted so much more from this band.
If you need to know, “J.A.F.A” actually stands for (Just Another F*cking Aucklander) but that has no effect on how banging this song is. It’s punchy and anthemic and tells the story of how love is in urban Auckland, New Zealand. Although I’ve never been there, I liked how hearing this song made me feel like I had more in common with Aucklanders than not. Stylistically, this song starts with a very rap-rock vibe before moving into a sound that splits the difference between alt-rock and post-punk perfectly. It’s energetic and full of angst giving “J.A.F.A” a sense of swagger that refuses to be ignored. What really stuck out to me about this song is how easily it gets caught in your head. After just one listen, I found myself humming this track subconsciously just due to the infectious nature of the track. Long story short, “J.A.F.A” is a great song and Capricore is a band that you should absolutely be spending some time with.
