It’s super cold up here in Minneapolis. Although it’s not as bad as it was yesterday as the wind has finally calmed down, the weather outside has me wishing I was somewhere warmer. Somewhere like California so I figure this morning is the perfect time to listen to some California-bred music starting with “Down With The Ship” from King Tide.

“Down With The Ship” is a furiously paced punk sound with great dynamics behind it and a stellar sense of heart. It’s very much in the skate punk vein of things but there’s also something a bit retro about some of this song that reminded me a bit of old-school Social Distortion. Although, overall, this song remains high energy and almost aggressive in nature, there is a small break towards the end of the song that really showcases King Tide’s versatility before ending the song on a high note. Although not a Fat Wreck Chords band, I feel like King Tide is leaning into that world. Sure, you don’t have that signature Fat Wreck drum tone but that’s what sets this band apart from bands like No Use For a Name and Strung Out while giving them the same kind of energy.
