This weekend didn’t feel like October. It felt like August. It was hot as hell up here in the Twin Cities and, although some people surely loved it, I hated it. It doesn’t feel like fall. I haven’t even put up my Halloween decorations because it just feels wrong, but the air shifted overnight. Today is gloomy and chilly. Perfect hoodie weather, perfect fall weather. It has me feeling motivated and happy. I know that seems weird. Most people let gloomy weather affect their moods negatively, but not me. I’m ready to take on the day one single at a time, so let’s dig into “One Eleven” from The Jack Knives.
This is not the first time I’m telling you about The Jack Knives. I’ve shared a bunch of singles from this band in the past, but it’s been a hot minute since I’ve done so, so this is your reminder that this band deserves your attention. This song addresses the American dream. It talks about how complicated it is to both romanticize the dream while coming to terms with the fact that, most days, we are all just struggling to survive. This song balances the two sides of the story, but has the perfect amount of defeated angst contrasting against a super triumphant kind of mood. The song has a very Gaslight Anthem kind of vibe to it, but with a twist that is The Jack Knives’ distinct, no-frills kind of rock sound.
