Girl at the Rock Shows

An opening track to an album is super important. It will either catch you and make you want more or leave you a little less than satisfied and leave the door open for another band to swoop in and win over your heart. Thankfully, in the case of “Never Home”, the album opener from Hotlung’s latest album ‘In Spite Of’, it will leave you wanting oh so much more.

As front-woman Kelly Dalbeck says,  “It’s about being a woman in general and never really feeling like you have complete agency over your own body. You’re never the one in complete control of it, there’s always some other factor going on. My experience has been that as women we sometimes disassociate from our bodies, too.” There’s so much depth in that statement and, like the song, so much heart. Add the powerful post-hardcore and grunge vibe of this song and you are left with a track that will leave you with so many feelings in your head and an infectious sound in your heart. Although not an overly intense track, I love the intensity that comes from the raw presentation of every word and note. Hotlung jut got their start in 2022 which, in the world of bands, is not that long ago. The members of this group are relatively young on top of that. This all means that there is a lot more to come from Hotlung and I can not wait to hear more.
