Anberlin is not a new name. In fact, they are just steps away from being a household name especially if someone in your household grew up in the emo and pop-punk scene of the early 2000s. Although I never got super into this band, I have always had a soft spot for them. Their sound is iconic and was the soundtrack for many angsty teens back in the day. It may not have been my soundtrack but that didn’t stop me from enjoying them. Long story short, they have always been a nostalgic act for me but, after hearing their new song “Seven”, I feel like they are right back on top and can no longer be classified as solely a nostalgic band.
“Seven” has a sens eof power behind it that I don’t recall Anberlin having back in the day. This could be due to the fact that original vocalist Stephen Christian was replaced by Memphis May Fire’s Matty Mullins but, really, I feel like it’s more just a sign of the evolution of this band. There’s a slight lean into something almost dark and industrial in this song that I really really enjoye hearing but, at the end of it all, this is clearly a song from Anberlin. It’s full of heart and passion but, more importantly, creativity. If you think you know Anberlin, I think you should step back and check out “Seven” so you can marvel at where this band is going after all of these years.
