Sometimes I regret falling out of the local Twin Cities metal scene. It was my home for so many years and I still have many friends in the scene but I took a step back. I can’t tell you why other than the fact that more opportunities started popping up for me and I couldn’t help but take them. Honestly, I’m not a metal head. I’m a pop-punk princess but the feeling of being at a metal show (especially a local one) is something that I absolutely love and crave. Listening to Mirror of Being’s newish track “XIX” made me remember just how much I miss being super involved in the local metal scene.
Mirror of Being is a metalcore band from right here in Minneapolis. Okay, calling them “metalcore” doesn’t quite do this group’s sound justice. Sure, it’s metalcore but there is an influence of screamo styled vocals here and almost progressive metal leaning guitar riffs that will leave your head spinning. This track is heavy hitting and, even though nearly five minutes long, never gives you a chance to catch your breath in the best way possible. Everything about this song is dark from the intensity of the instrumentation to the lyrics that discus the struggle of dealing with your inner demons yet there’s something oddly infectious about “XIX”. I loved the slight sense of nostalgia that I got from this song but how, at the same time, it has me so excited for the future of this scene and Mirror of Being specifically.
