I’m all about the weird and eclectic so when I received “Crusher” from Jacob Panic with the tagline of, “Banjo driven metal music!”, I was intrigued. Sure, I know there are a few metal bands that feature a banjo out there already. The first one that comes to mind is Show Me The Body but, if I’m being honest, that band just doesn’t hook me. I don’t know what it is. I want to love them and all of their creativity but it has just never stuck with me. What has stuck with me is this heavy-banjo-heavy track from Jacob Panic.
First off, let’s get this out of the way– the recording quality of “Crusher” is a bit rough but don’t let that take away from the uniqueness of this track for you. The track starts off with vocals blaring right into your ears before that distinct banjo sound takes over. “Crusher” is anthemic and epic with a slight influence of symphonic metal shining through especially with the way the layers of vocals create an almost choral effect but, truly, it was the fast picking of the banjo that had me hooked. I love how it reigns supreme throughout this song while also giving all of the other parts of this track time to shine. Banjo riffs and banjo-based breakdowns– what more could you ask for? Check out and get lost in the unique world that is Jacob Panic!
