Although I am loving the nostalgic Myspace-era playlists I am finding right now in celebration of the impending When We Were Young festival, I feel a bit restless with them. Sure, it’s fun to hear a song pop up that I haven’t heard in years but, at the same time, that magic only lasts for a few seconds and then I settle into the song that knows my heart inside and out due to all of the time I spent with it back in the day. This means it’s time for a change of pace and although “faretheewell” from Lake Disappointment is a brand new song to me from a band I have never heard of before, it instantly won over my heart and soul.

“farethewell” starts with a sweet acoustic guitar part that quickly builds into something larger but still just as sweet. Okay, maybe “sweet” isn’t quite the right word to use here as there is a sense of grit and raw emotion throughout this song but there’s also something oddly playful about the guitar happening behind the heart-on-sleeve styled vocals. Although a super familiar-feeling track with elements of old-school pop-punk and emo band of years gone by popping in and out throughout this track, there are also some surprises including trumpet harmonies that will make your heart sing. At four minutes long, this is, by no means, a short song but, as the track faded out, I couldn’t help but be left wanting so much more from this Winnegpeg-based band. Luckily for all of us, “farethewell” is the lead single from their upcoming debut album that is due out on November 15th. I know that’s still a couple of weeks away but I am so excited for it and think you will be too after just one listen to “faretheewell”.
