There are some times when I don’t know how to refer to an act. xogoodbye. is one of those. Although pitched as a solo song from a former member of metalcore band A Scent Like Wolves, this song definitely doesn’t feel like a solo track. Regardless, “portrait of” is the perfect song for those people who, like me, constantly get sucked into a nostalgia-fueled rabbit hole but want something fresh.
xogoodbye. is the monker for Al Boltz, a former member of A Scent Like Wolves. Al was brought up in the early 2000s punk scene and you can feel that in this song. Right off the bat, this track reminded me a bit of old-school From First To Last but with a more modern-emo twist to it. The rises and falls throughout this song are stark but I love how that up and down is somehow blended together perfectly with the tried and true emo-hardcore inspired instrumentation that drives this track forward. At just under three minutes long, this song is a wee bit short but I feel like it’s more than enough to pull you into xogoodbye.’s world and leave you wanting so much more.
