St. Patrick’s Day is coming up quickly. Honestly, it’s not a big holiday for me. It used to be when I could take the day off and just day drink but I’m too old to day drink and too busy to take the day off so now it’s just another day to the point where I will probably be dressed in all black because, like usual, I’ll have a show that night. Even though St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t hold the same kind of charm it once did for me, it’s a good excuse to dig into some Celtic punk music (not that you need an excuse to do so) so let’s get ready for the holiday by checking out “Bar Maid” from Hounds of Belfast.
Hounds of Belfast may hail from Los Angeles, CA rather than Ireland but you could easily be fooled into thinking this group of musicians just came off the boat. There’s definitely a traditional Celtic instrumentation happening in this song but I love the way the band adds the street-punk attitude from Los Angeles into the mix. It’s Flogging Molly instrumentation with the intensity of Dropkick Murphy’s vocals. It has the energy of Flatfoot 56 but the nod to traditionalism that you may get some a band more like, well, I can’t think of a classic Irish band. All I know is that listening to “Bar Maid” will get you ready to belly up to a bar come St. Patrick’s Day and have you ready to see green everywhere you turn. It’s a feel good song full of life and a jig-like beat that will have you dancing in no time.
