I fell in love with The Catalina the second I heard them for the first time. Their fun-loving energy was heard loud and clear through their music and the amount of energy it gave off was just perfect. I won’t go into the details of me drooling over this band but, for more insight on it, check out my review of ‘Love Somebody’ HERE!
I will say that knowing they are a local band (at least local to me) and not being able to see them live has been a rough reality but I had the absolute honor of asking them some questions. I know it’s nothing like a live show but at least it’s a look a little bit deeper into this amazing band!
We’re going to start off with a two-parter- Pick between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, or Parks & Rec
The Office! Most of the time when we converse it’s just in The Office quotes back and forth.
Now that you’ve picked, please assign each band member as a character from said show:
Adam: Dwight, intelligent and gets the job done right
James: Jim, witty and plans well but sometimes they backfire.
Justin: Darryl, sarcastic and no Microsoft office knowledge
What is the one thing you wish you could change about the Minneapolis music scene?
There seems to be a feeling that it is a bubble. There are so many amazing musicians that I wish the music would spread further!
What’s your favorite frozen pizza
Jacks- cheap and effective
What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?
Is Zoom a hobby? Haha For me it has been a mixture of cooking and exploring nature. Although I also think everyone should watch The Queens Gambit!
What’s your go-to coffee order?
Medium or light roast, black with no room for cream. (I’m an 80 year old man on the inside)
Are you okay with unconventional interview questions? (too late!)
I LOVE them
How sad will you be if the Minnesota State Fair is canceled again this year?
I have lived here 7 years, and never been! I was planning on going last year. All that to say I will be pretty sad if I have to wait ANOTHER year.
Did Matt Skiba help or hurt Blink 182? Or, if you have no opinion, that’s fine too (although I’ll absolutely be judging you)!
I think there’s nothing like OG 182. I like Tom more (and Angles and Airwaves). That being said it’s probably because I’m a bit nostalgic.
If you could compare yourself to a sea creature, what one would it be and why?
A sea lion, mainly because I miss the warm weather and would enjoy basking in the sun!
What is your personal hell on earth and why is it IKEA?
I think because there are so many things. Literal sensory overload. That and I usually have about $10 to spend which is enough for some meatballs.
Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!)
That’s tough! One of my favorites is a song from Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors called “Rowdy Heart, Broken Wing”. He’s one of my favorite lyricists.
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
It would most definitely be an AC/DC song, any of them.
What’s one thing I should know about your new tracks before listening to them?
Be prepared for classic guitar hooks and 80’s flare but with a modern facelift!
The Catalina is hard at work on some new songs so make sure to keep your eyes open! Their next new track is “Runaround” and is due out on February 12th! Keep an eye on their socials (and mine) for that to drop!
