You get hooked the second you hit play on “Mammoths” from Boss Battle. Although this is a short song at only two minutes and thirteen seconds long, it will leave you wanting so much more from this band. Okay, maybe I can’t speak for everyone but I was in love upon first listen and had to know more about how Boss Battle came to be. From their influences to their Taco Bell order, I wanted to know everything and jumped on the opportunity to ask them anything I wanted!

If you could have dinner with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
David Bowie. He’s more than a musician, he’s art and culture and seems like a really fun person to have dinner with.

What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on?
I asked a guy what his favorite book was and he said he’d never read a book. It got increasingly more awkward from there

Favorite lyrics of all time?
I’m a sad girl at heart, so the lyrics that stick with me forever are really crushing ones.

What’s your favorite menu item at Taco Bell?
Mexican pizza with bean and cheese only, and doritos locos tacos

What was the first concert you ever went to?
Backstreet Boys Millenium tour

What’s your favorite method of listening to music?
Tidal is my most-listened to, but my partner and I like to buy vinyl of anything we stream over and over

Who has the best delivery pizza?
Dominos thin crust baby

What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Mammoths”?
We love this song but didn’t know it would be so well received – it’s super short and heavy and fun for us to play, and we were shocked when we debuted it live and people FREAKED out. It’s working title was “Temple of the Prog”

Why are you guys such a good band?
It’s a combo of Ben being a really amazing, creative drummer, Chico is an incredible writer, especially on synth and guitar, and I have the vocal abilities to do what Chico asks me to try

Okay, joking on that last one but, really, I love all of the different styles that come together to form “Mammoths”. Did just one member come up with all of it or was it more of a collective?
Most of Boss Battle starts as Chico and Ben jamming, so the base of everything is that really sick robot guitar with super hard drumming, then Chico and I go back over it and start layering synths, coming up with vocal ideas, and typically lyrics come last. If I remember right, Chico and I wrote the lyrics together on a road trip back from Houston.

How many drumheads and strings do you guys go through in a typical week?
It used to be a lot, we’re hard players, but we learned how to play better

Out of this entire song, what 13 seconds are your favorite and why?
1:12 – 1:34: We all love Deftones and this was sort of my fun homage to Chino’s sexy what-is-he-even-saying vocal style

Say you had to have a top-40 rapper cover this song, who would you hope it would be?
Erin says Kendrick Lamar, Chico says Ghostface or Danny Brown

Like I said, I love everything about Boss Battle and reading Erin’s answers to my quirky questions just solidified that love. I would love to sit down with a Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell with Erin and David Bowie while we talk about Chino’s (from Deftones) “what-is-he-even-saying” vocal style. Although that dinner will never happen, getting to hear a bit more about this band and their influences definitely put their sound into perspective and just made me love their creativity even more.

“Mammoth” is out now so make sure to give it a listen. Make sure to also follow Boss Battle on their socials for more new tracks that will surely be just as good, if not better, than this one!
