I can often get lost in a haze of defeat when I’m working. The truth is, I’m a workaholic who puts too much on her plate and then gets down on herself for not being able to get everything done. It’s hard and I can really be hard on myself about this when, in reality, I do more work than a normal person and do it well. It’s just never enough for me and, because of that, I often spiral into that world of defeat and darkness. That’s not the case today. Although I am feeling my normal levels of off-the-charts stress, it’s a good day but I love that “Cigarettes” from roommates acknowledges that sense of defeat in a way.

“Cigarettes” has nothing to do about being a workaholic but is a song about being at a bar way too late after a bad breakup with one too many shots and an empty packs of smokes wondering, “What’s the point?”. Like I said, not about being a workaholic but I feel like the sentiment is transferrable. That mixed with the sheer catchiness of this song and I think “Cigarettes” from roommates just became my new best friend for those times when I am feeling defeated. There’s desperation in the vocals but, at the same time, there’s a triumphant sense of hope and resilience. I love how this song could be taken either in a dark way or a positive way but, either way, you get hit with a heavy dose of pop-punk-perfection.
