An opening track to a debut release truly sets the tone for a band. I mean, that kind of goes without saying but I really appreciate that bands seem to be putting more thought into which song they want to use as their debut. Bands are picking songs that absolutely draw you in leaving you wanting more even though you know nothing about the band. Case in point? “(Akira) Bike Slide”– the opening track on Dear Season’s debut EP (which is out now)!

Although Dear Season has been around since the early spring of 2023, they just recently released their debut self-titled EP and it kicks off with “(Akira) Bike Slide”. I love how this song starts with a flurry of activity and dazzling guitarwork before falling into a very emotional and beautiful section of music. Throughout this near four-minute long song, you are treated to a rollercoaster ride of emotions and sounds. Although the song seems to go from one extreme to another in the blink of an eye, something about Dear Season’s overall sound and vibe makes it feel like it’s just right and that the differences, although obvious, are not shocking. You could call this song emo as that’s the vibe it gives off but you would be sorry to not noticed the math-rock inspired guitar work or the slight edge of post-hardcore tendencies that shine through in certain points of this track. Although I haven’t heard any other songs from Dear Season yet, the amount of love I have for this band after checking out this opening track is telling me I should probably ignore everything else I have to do this afternoon and just dig in. Won’t you join me?
