Okay, I know I’m super late on sharing this song from Self Run Will and I can not apologize enough about that but, truthfully, it doesn’t have to be St. Patricks Day to enjoy this song. “St Patrick’s Day” isn’t just a song for the holiday, it’s a song for every day life and it’s absolutely one that deserves your attention.
This song is from the archives as it was actually write about twenty years ago. You can feel that with the grit and slightly “off” levels of the recording of this song but I kind of like the charm that it brings to this song. “St. Patrick’s Day” is raw and slightly unhinged in all of the right ways. The story goes that this song was written by vocalist Mike Barnhill hungover and in his backyard. The song then sat on hard drives for over two decades until guitarist Patrick Barnhill decided to unearth the recordings and work on mixing them “the way they were always meant to be heard.” I’ll be honest, I had no clue who Self Run Will was twenty years ago but I love how you can taste just a small sense of nostalgia in this song that feels like twenty-years ago. At the same time, there’s something fresh about this song and it instantly reminded me of the local Twin Cities punk scene I call home now due to the grit and angst but also the heart that comes through in this song. Unfortunately, Self Run Will broke up and, from what I can tell, they will not be getting back together anytime soon or ever but at least we have this song to keep their talent and name alive.
