The backstory of Alessandra Rose’s new song “Punch to the Lungs” is absolutely heartbreaking (but with a happy ending). I was going to work on paraphrasing what she sent over but here’s a direct quote from Alessandra regarding this track:

“My child was born not breathing, after intervention he finally gasped, and he survived. Three weeks later his body started to work on overdrive – he developed pneumonia. I sat at a 90 degree angle every night for over a year holding my child upright so he could breathe. I never slept so he could. He was soon diagnosed with rapid airway disease and we had answers — inhalers and medication. Finally, he could breathe in and out. I wrote “Punch to the Lungs” to be his victory song. Dreaming of a Rodeo, and using imagery of a cowboy in the arena I describe the feeling of one fighting for survival. I leaned into a story of a cowboy who dances with a bull, who has no fear and charges ahead leaving all sorrow behind.”

Like I said, completely heartbreaking but with a triumphant ending and that’s exactly what you get when listening to “Punch to the Lungs”. Although the entire track is completely gorgeous, it’s Alessandra’s vocals that made me feel all the feels throughout this song. They have a little bit of a sense of drama like The Dresden Dolls, an undeniable sense of power like Adele, and so much heart that they can only be called “Alessandra Rose” styled vocals. The best part of this is it’s almost as if Alessandra doesn’t recognize the power of her vocals in this track. They seem to almost just go with the flow and she slides from note to note with a sense of ease but if you listen, and I mean really listen, you can heart heartbreak and triumph in every word, nay, every syllable, throughout this track.

“Punch to the Lungs” is the first single to come from Alessandra’s upcoming album ‘Rodeomothh’ which is due out on October 20th. If this song has you stuck like it has me, make sure to keep your eyes out for more from this amazing musician.
