Girl at the Rock Shows

I’m already sensing a theme with today’s shares. I promise, it’s not on purpose but, so far, both songs I have for you today have been anthemic protest songs about classism. Although the last single I shared with you had a very punk influence to it, this next one from Nuclear Family Fantasy has more of a grunge influence which is beyond perfect.

I am not typically one for fuzz in my songs. Honestly, I feel like too much fuzz can make a song hard to follow and it just isn’t pleasurable to my ears but somehow Nuclear Family Fantasy has nailed of balance of just enough fuzz to catch you but not enough to distract you. “What I Get Paid” is a song about living paycheck to paycheck. Although I’m having a good month right now, I have definitely been there and will surely be there again. I like how this song presents the frustration that one feels when in a tough financial spot but, what I love more, is how there is no sense of judgement with the words. This song serves as a reminder that we can all get down on our luck at some time but, eventually, “When [We] Get Paid”, things will brighten up if only for a wee bit.
