I’m going to Chicago for a show tomorrow night with a good friend. The plan was to come home on Saturday but the friend we are meeting up with in Chicago brought up staying in Chicago until Sunday. Then the friend I am going to Chicago with brought up a show I really want to go to on Sunday in Rochester which is more on the way back from Chicago than not. Long story short, my plans for the weekend are expanding which is creating a sense of stress and excitement in me all at the same time. There’s nothing wrong with this but it’s distracting me from work which is my main priority right now. I need to get grounded and “Scissors and Rocks” from hatsnriver is helping me do just that.
The first thing that struck me about this song and hatsnriver’s sound in general is how it’s so perfectly polished yet has a very raw vibe to it. This band is clearly DIY-based with their folk-pop-punk sound but they also clearly have put thought into everything and anything needed to creative this song. From the fast-paced motion of this song to the all-too-relatable lyrics, “Scissors and Rocks” instantly had me hooked. There’s something about this song that begs to be heard live. I think it’s the endless amount of energy that radiates from this song but there’s also something just fun about it that makes me really want to experience this band, and this song specifically, in live form. Just when you think you have this song figured out, the band switches it up so don’t leave this song early. The last minute of “Scissors and Rocks” is epic.
