Girl at the Rock Shows

I love all of my local bands. Honestly, I tell people that Minneapolis should be considered a music capital of the country and I’m not being dramatic. There are so many different genres, styles, vibes, and they all work in unison when it comes to the Twin Cities music scene. I truly feel honored to call this home and really don’t know if this blog and my concert obsession would be the same without all of the amazing live music we have here. One of the most joyous things for me when it comes to this scene is becoming obsessed with a local band and watching them grow. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing with Unstable Shapes and their new track “Feral Joy” absolutely shows a sense of growth and continues to solidify their spot as one of my favorite local bands right now.

The first thing that struck me about this brand new song (and, really, all of Unstable Shapes’ songs) was the lyrics. Like the delivery, everything about every word comes drenches in primal emotion. With lines like “I’m all out of joy / I know I can’t be soothed,” it’s hard to not feel personally attacked by some of Andrew Cahak’s words but, at the same time, they bring a sense of comfort. I think that’s one of the reasons that Unstable Shapes stands out to me so much. Sure, when you go see them live and you see Andrew essentially break on stage as he shouts his lyrics at you, it hits you hard, but what’s crazy to me is how you get that same feeling even if you’re just sitting at your desk and checking out a new song from them. I don’t mean to ignore the rest of the band. Clearly, it’s Andrew’s words that hooked me on this band but it’s the way the rest of the members delicately dance around this heavy words with a slight sense of whimsy and optimism. It creates a soundscape that is almost scary to enter because it means you will be left with some heavy thoughts but, at the end of it, you don’t quite want to leave because it makes you feel alive, seen, supported, and loved. Check out “Feral Joy” from Unstable Shapes now and, if you live in the Twin Cities, make sure to catch them live. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
