My journey into becoming the concert addict I am today started at a little club in Des Moines, Iowa called House of Bricks. I basically lived there when I wasn’t at school, and I felt that there was a whole little ecosystem there, from the bands to the people to the staff and everything in between. It was the golden age of pop-punk and emo music. Bands like Bayside, Hidden in Plain View, Punchline, June, My American Heart, Fall Out Boy, Houston Calls, Halifax, etc., etc. were constantly coming to town and playing at this super intimate club. I loved every band that I saw, and they all quickly became the soundtrack to my life. It’s been years since this time. House of Bricks is sadly gone, but the music is still right here in my heart, so to see The Junior Varsity’s name come across my desk after not hearing that name since the House Of Bricks days filled me with an odd sense of emotion– both good and bad.
“Anxiety” is the first song from The Junior Varsity in seventeen years, but listening to this song, it’s as if nothing has changed. The sound is very much The Early November but has a bit more of an edge like it always had but what really strikes me about this song are the lyrics. I have always loved the genius wordplay of The Junior Varsity and it made me so happy to hear how that hasn’t changed but how the words have grown with me. Instead of tracks about typical teenage stuff, this song focuses on, you guessed it, “Anxiety”. Whether or not you have the connection with The Junior Varsity that I do, “Anxiety” is a solid song and it should absolutely get you stoked about this band being back in the game.
Just for funsies and because this song has me all up in my feelings, here’s a picture of me and a member of the band from way back in the day (I’m thinking this is circa 2005 or 2006).
