I don’t have a quirky intro for you right now, but don’t let that stop you from reading this post. Honestly, I’m just in the mood to check out new music and will continue to do so as long as I have this burst of creative energy, so instead of wasting it on trying to figure out how to lure you into this post, let’s jump right in and check out ‘Foals,’ the new album from Once More, Autumn.

‘Foals’ kicks off with the title track. Although lengthy at five minutes and nineteen seconds, “Foals” is the kind of track that instantly swipes you off your feet and into the clouds. After a very ambient and chill opening, you get to hear the dazzling sound that is Once More, Autumn. It’s a very chill and slightly slow-moving indie-rock sound that comes with intention and a sense of mature sensitivity. I know that none of those things sound like something I would be super into, but on a Monday night when I have no plans to leave the house and there’s a chill in the air that is pushing through the open windows of my house, this more chill, dramatic, and gorgeous opening track was exactly what I needed to help me cozy into this EP.

Although “Love Is Never Waning” continues to drive home a sense of warm coziness, it also comes with a darker hue compared to the opening track. There’s more hesitation in the vocals, and there is a bit more of a steady rain kind of feeling behind this track. That being said, it’s a complete stunner, just like the opening track, and the ebb and flow of power and tenderness throughout this epic four-minute piece of art is nothing short of breathtaking. Beyond the sheer beauty of this song is the lyrics– or lack thereof. There really aren’t many words in this song when you think about it, lasting just over four minutes long, but, at the same time, the words being sung in this track speak volumes, and anything else would have just been pointless. A powerful song with powerful words and a powerful message in those few words, “Love Is Never Waning,” is a spectacular showing of emotion and power.

Things pick up a bit for “Halcyon.” This song is a bit more standard when it comes to its length, lasting just over three minutes, but that’s where the “standard” stops. This song shows a sharper side of Once More, Autumn so perfectly. I wouldn’t call this song aggressive in any way, shape, or form, but it feels aggressive when compared to the lush two opening tracks of this five-song album. The beat is a bit more severe, but the vocals continue to float as they have thus far on this album, creating a super cool juxtaposition that will leave you trying to figure out how all of the pieces fit together so well, but after a couple of minutes, realizing that that’s just the magic of this band.

Something about “Places” feels larger than life. Okay, maybe “larger than life” is the wrong phrase to use here, but it just feels so much bigger than the speakers in my house. This song has a very polished vibe to it while staying true to Once More, Autumns’ distinct raw and vulnerable haze that they have in all of their songs. There’s a delicacy to the drums in this song that I really appreciated. With such a boisterous sound coming from the vocals and the guitars dancing, it would have been so easy to overdo it on the drums, making this a bit heavier than it should have been, but this band knew that wasn’t the play here. They knew to take it easy and let the power come from within, which is exactly what happens during this gorgeous track.

Closing out this stunning EP is “Talons.” I never wanted this listening experience to end, and this final track left me on a cliffhanger. Instead of letting the album slip away as the band slowly and peacefully ushers you back to reality, “Talons” ends this album with a bang. This song has a power that I didn’t hear in the previous tracks. Haunting elements that take over the background of this song leave you with more questions than answers in all of the right ways. Again, you get to see the band showcase their sheer power in this final track, which, again, will leave you wanting so much more than these five songs have offered up.

The power, perfection, and thought they put into their music is staggering, stunning, and something we could all use a bit more of. Let’s make sure that this band knows that two EPs and a smattering of singles is just not enough. We demand more from them because we all need a bit more beauty in our lives, and that’s exactly what they bring to the table.
