Girl at the Rock Shows

It has been months since I was introduced to Youlogy with their track “Doom” but I haven’t stopped thinking about them. The raw grunge vibes mixed with this subtle youthful charm and a very DIY and charmingly styled video had me sold on this band. I wanted to know everything I could about this band. The good, the bad, their coffee orders and, luckily for me, they were willing to oblige me so check out the super fun interview I got to do with all three amazing members of this truly spectacular band!

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

• Chris: “I’m a total no savo kid so it would be really hard to explain to my straight from Mexico grandma. I wouldn’t know where to begin to answer.”
• Ari: “That’s tough since she’s Puerto Rican and knows nothing about rock. I’d probably just say she wouldn’t really like it musically and that would be enough for her. Then maybe I’d make a joke about how she’d probably have to pray after listening to us if she ever did. She’s passed now, so hopefully she’s watching all our shows, she’s got the best seat in the house.”
• R2: “Before my grandma passed away, she asked me what we played and I basically told her ‘our instruments are distorted and the vocals are echoey’ and she said ‘así no más que ruido?’ (so it’s nothing but noise)”

What’s your go-to coffee order?

• Chris: “Oof I am not a coffee drinker. So I don’t got a go-to order but remember to drink your water!”
• Ari: “Lately I’ve been drinking it straight black, iced. On a weekend I’d go for an iced coffee with almond milk and white chocolate sweetener.”
• R2: “The coffee place i go to (s/o cardinal points) changes their beans every week, but i always put salted caramel and almond milk”

What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on?

• Chris: “Honestly I’ve never been on much dates, I’ve always been an at home type.”
• Ari: “I don’t date often, and I’m pretty awkward around people I’m interested in, so I’d say every single one of them. But if I had to pick, one time this girl and I went on a walk at the creek and she kept playing like those basic tik tok cutesy songs and like Disney music. Like, we’re enjoying nature right now…can we just get to know each other without the frozen soundtrack playing in the back? That would be sick. Felt like a very forced way to paint a scene. “
• R2: “Has to be with my now fiancee. We were both shy, nervous and didn’t even know if we were going to have a second date just because of how awkward we were, but in the end we are now happily engaged and she’s our #1 fan!”

If you could compare yourself to an insect, what insect would it be and why?

• Chris: “I would be a rhinoceros beetle, I feel like I relate to them. Strong and durable with tons of secrets waiting to surprise you. 
• Ari: “Probably a rolly polly. They ball up when you touch them, and I feel like that’s so me. I’m not really a social person. Unless I’m in my element, then I’m thriving. Same with rolly pollies; you lift a rock and when they’re with their people they just be crawling and vibing, yanno?”
• R2: “Walking stick bc they’re slow and i always take my time doing things”

Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!)

• Chris: “Them Changes by Thundercat. It’s honestly a song that has carried me through a lot of tough times in my life.”
• Ari: “I leave Earth to ask you why you failed” Necrosis by Narrow Head
• R2: “You stabbed me in the back deeper than I’ll admit. you’ll never understand you didn’t see the blood on your hands” – Tell Me You’re Sorry by Real Friends (such a banger)”

If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?

• Chris: “Idk if you’ve seen the movie Farris bullers day off its the song that is playing in the background as he’s trying to race home at the end.”
• Ari: “Magazine Beach by Vein.fm”
• R2: “Hatred by Paleface Swiss”

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

• Chris: “I have 2 that I can’t choose between, first is when I got to see the $uicideboy$ in concert and the second is when we made it up to Oklahoma and getting to play the first show of our first little tour.”
• Ari: “I recently saw Sunami at Paper Tiger in San Antonio, that was a pretty sick show.”
• R2: “Real Friends!! saw them 6 times and they get better every time! they’re such down to earth people.”

Who is your favorite top-40 artist right now?

• Chris: “Is Tyler, the Creator considered top 40??”
• Ari: “I really like Doja Cat. I don’t know if she’s exactly top 40 since I don’t really dive into that world much, but when I’m feeling in my femme element, she definitely gets the vibes going for me.”
• R2: “I don’t listen to top 40 artists, but doja cat is cool”

Have you ever been able to finish a Rubik’s Cube?

• Chris: “No and I don’t think I ever will. I’m dumb lmao”
• Ari: “Many times actually. I spent a good week trying to memorize algorithms to solve the normal 3×3. Over time I’ve solved a 2×2, 4×4, Pyraminx, and a Mirror Cube.”
• R2: “I can’t even finish word searches, let alone a rubik’s cube.”

If you could have dinner with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

• Chris: “I’ve always thought about this question, trying to figure out who would be an actual good dinner guest and id go with MF DOOM”
• Ari: “Joan Jett. Seeing movies about how she made her way through the music industry from The Runaways to the black hearts reminds me of myself always just wanting to make it as a musician, and at the time it was tough as a female in the rock world. It would be cool to hear some of her sound check experiences back then and other things.”
• R2: “It would be the guys in Real Friends. their music has helped me in so many ways and just to have some time with them would be so sick!”

What’s your favorite sport to watch either live or on TV?

• Chris: “Super in to the UFC so I try to catch those fights on TV”
• Ari: “Football. I know they completely suck right now, but I love the cowboys. You won’t see me boasting on the internet after a win though. I’m not THAT person.”
• R2: “Football mainly, but I love baseball and basketball. Ari and I are cowboys fans and we always text each other while watching the game. we basically commentate.”

What’s your favorite method of listening to music (i.e. vinyl, cassette, 8-track, etc.)?

• Chris: “I’ve recently started a collection on vinyl, but I’d always have to give it to streaming. I’m always on the go and streaming the go to.”
• Ari: “I honestly just blast music on shuffle from Spotify while I clean my room on Sundays. My favorite one to listen to while doing chores is Satisfaction by Narrow Head.”
• R2: “I have a pretty sick vinyl collection, so vinyl.”

What’s one thing I should know before listening to “DOOM”?

• Chris: “Nothing at all. We have never been ones for preconceived notions. Everything is up to you, the listener. Your interpretation of the mood and how the song makes you feel is all part of the experience of Youlogy.”
• Ari: “The song is about a dream I had. It was the first time I’ve ever had a dream where I was in someone else’s body. Also the first dream I’ve had where I’m watching but no one can see me if that makes sense, like I’m a fly on the wall. Usually I dream in first person so that was crazy. The song jumps from different perspectives I experienced so it’s kinda up to you to picture it how you wish.”
• R2: “Get ready to sit back, sip your favorite beverage and just vibe.”

You call your sound “grunge-gaze” and, honestly, I didn’t know that could be a thing but, after listening to this track, I get it– who would you say your biggest influence was when it came to “DOOM” in particular?

• Chris: “I think the biggest influence for DOOM would’ve had to be a lot of S.O.A.D. and Deftones. It was pretty much what was all in my music rotation during the making.”
• Ari: “To be honest, no one. When I woke up from that dream, I wrote down everything I could remember on my notes. Then I rewrote the story kinda like a poem. After that, I just kept fiddling on the guitar until I found a riff that fit the feeling the poem gave me. After that it was all about repositioning and rephrasing with the guys.”
• R2: “For me, it would be Slow Crush. their song “glow” in particular, the fast paced but chilled out vocals spoke to me in a way.”

Who came up with the concept of the video?

• Chris: “Ari was the one that came up with the main video concept; we added the details.”
• Ari: “I’d say we all had a say in the video on certain aspects. Chris helped with the framing of the play through portion of the video while Turi and I got our friend Lali to be in a couple shots for the “story” which honestly we didn’t have any direction or a budget for anything fancy, but my dream did take place at a lake and luckily we live 10 minutes away from one.”
• R2: “We all worked on it as a group, but it was actually Ari. The song is based off a dream she had and she wanted the video to portray that dream, so we all dug the idea.”

Out of all of the powerful lines of words in this song, which line is your favorite and why?

• Chris: “I wouldn’t be able to choose. The song hits different elements in my life and all the lyrics resonate with me far too much to be picky on one line only.”
• Ari: “’Silly girl, don’t touch your toes now.’ In the dream this girl was swimming and happened to brush her leg on what turned out to be a piece of a body that had been dumped in the water (along with many others). I like how it goes hand in hand with the phrase ‘f around and find out’, and hopefully with the origin being explained it adds some eeriness the next time you listen.”
• R2: “’Get out of your head they’re screaming’ stands out to me because it hits me personally as someone going through mental health issues.”

“DOOM” is part of an eight-song album, ‘Calling Hours’. I know nobody can ever play favorites but which song is your favorite on this album and why?

• Chris: “I most def have to go with either TRASH CITY or COMA those are both so fun yo play live.”
• Ari: “I really like “idontwannadie”. It’s very personal to me. For the longest time I had always been down about a lot of things but for some reason when I wrote the chord progression for that song, those words came out when I was freestyle singing if you wanna call it that. That moment made me realize that I’ve had good memories that are such a shame to have because they’re gone, and someday I’ll be gone too. I love experiencing life, it’s a blessing to experience, and I seriously am scared of death, so singing “why do we die?” Was a wake up call for me and was a turning point in my life.”
• R2: “COMA HANDS DOWN!! one of our heaviest songs we wrote and such a fun song to play live. just the aggressive tone, how heavy it is, the back and forth between clean and scream, it’s such a sick song to play and listen to.”

‘Calling Hours’ came out last year. What have you been up to since then?

• Chris: “Man this year has been crazy. Me personally, I’m not up to much different than putting everything I have into the band. And we have so much more planned soon but I’ll let them tell you about it.”
• Ari: “I’m only 25, so between shows and not having to stress too much about putting new music out (yet), I’ve been figuring myself out. Focusing on my mental health and understanding how my brain works has been a journey. I got really into fishing, too. That has been super fun. That and fitness.”
• R2: “Since the album released back in November, we’ve been playing shows in Del Rio and outside our city (San Antonio, Austin, Eagle Pass) and we’ve played as far as OKC and Wichita, KS in summer ‘24. nothing but grinding!”

What does the future hold for Youlogy?

• Ari: “We’ve been really excited to start writing new music since we came back from our mini tour in July. We really want to hit other states in the future and play for new faces. Hopefully when things calm down we can finally relax and throw some ideas together.”
• R2: “We are currently in the process of writing some music to hopefully come out with an EP, we are also currently recording a song we’ve been playing at our shows that’s been a favorite. other than that, this year has been pretty productive and cannot wait to see what this upcoming years brings us!”

Is there anything else that you want everyone to know?

• Ari: “I’m glad people like our music. I know a lot of people are real quick to dismiss music because it’s not industry polished, so seeing the response we got from Calling Hours without having played in a big city really means a lot to us and to me especially in the sense that I mixed and mastered the album in my bedroom with “okay” equipment. The amount of stress I had was pretty insane, but man, we wouldn’t be where we are without our supporters. So, thank ya’ll <3”
• R2: “WE ARE NOT CALLED YOUOLOGY,  YOULOGR OR YOU LOW GEE we had people misinterpret our name many times (now we use it as jokes) but people get our name twisted.”

The music of Youlogy may not be polished but that just adds to the charm of this band. Youlogy is one of those bands that I truly feel is just getting started. Not only will “Doom” and the rest of their songs blow you away, I feel like the way everyone’s personalities shined throughout this interview really just adds that special sauce that you really need to make it as a band. I’ll go ahead and said it– This band has “It” and it was just truly an honor to be able to chat with them a bit before they are far too big for this little blog.
