It’s spooky season and I won’t even try to hide it– I’m a fan. I love the aesthetic that comes with this time of year and, more importantly, love the coziness that comes into play as the temperatures start to drop and the leaves start to fall. Long story short, I’m feeling the season right now and music like “Liu” from YenJu featuring Mary Zimmer is absolutely hitting the spot.
This song isn’t a straight-up spooky season song, but it has a vibe and ambiance that leans into that feeling. Overall, I would call this a symphonic black metal song, but it’s so much more than that. There’s a choral effect to the vocals that is nothing short of haunting, and the use of violin adds an eerie undertone throughout this song. I’ll be the first to admit that it took me a few seconds to warm up to the vocals that kick this song off. There’s no denying the beauty behind them, but it felt almost a bit more operatic than what I thought I could stomach. As the song moves on, you realize just how brilliant that tone is against the extreme instrumentation that is happening behind it. This song is aggressive, but it’s mystical at the same time. It’s full of desperation, anger, and angst, but with this sense of stunning beauty that shines like glitter at certain moments throughout this nearly four-minute-long song. “Liu” is dramatic in all the right ways, making it perfect for all of my fellow spooky season lovers.
