Girl at the Rock Shows

I experienced a lot of amazing and new-to-me music while at Riot Fest a couple of weeks ago. One of those amazing, new-to-me acts was Weakened Friends. They were playing as I was making my way to another stage, and although I wasn’t able to stay at their set long, they had me hooked. I loved their energy and the way that, although they were one of the first bands to play on the last day of this exhausting (albeit amazing) festival, they weren’t holding back. As I sit here, on a gloomy Thursday morning, listening to their song “Smoke and Mirrors,” I realize that that set was not a fluke. Listening to this song took me right back to that sunny Sunday morning with a smile on my face as I let the music take over.

This song is drenched in energy and a raw sense of emotion that comes through loud and clear, even with the infectious energy that reigns supreme throughout the three-minute song. There’s definitely a nod to nostalgia, with influences heard throughout this track, but what Weakened Friends does with those familiar sounds —twisting them into something fresh and slightly unfamiliar —is what makes this band stand out. I really love that there is something almost retro about this song in particular. I’m not just talking about the influences that can be heard throughout; it also comes from the recording quality. Don’t get me wrong, this song is flawlessly mixed and mastered but I love the little sense of grit that seems to highlight the DIY punk spirit of this band.
