I honestly don’t know where Rockville is, but I’m pretty sure that their winters can’t be half as bad as the winters up here in the Twin Cities. Okay, that makes it sound like I hate winter. I don’t. I actually love it. I love how cold it gets up here and absolutely adore snowy days. There was a cold snap recently, and I feel like I’m getting my first slight taste of winter today. The temperatures are not supposed to come even close to fifty and, although a lot of people at my office are grumbling about it, I couldn’t be more excited. This has nothing to do with this new song from Stoke Signals, but I just have to question, if “rockville winters build character,” what do Minnesota winters build?
This song will catch your attention right away with the clash of a cymbal before Stoke Signals comes in with their melodic punk sound. I like how this song has a sense of grit and angst behind it. It really drives the idea of this track being an anthem for the overlooked, the blue-collar underdogs, home with a sense of fury. This song screams resilience. It has its scars, but it has them healed and ready to take on a new adventure in a way. Okay, that may be a bit hard to follow without checking out this song, but there’s just this almost desperation that comes through in this song alongside the feeling of resilience, which I heard as an acknowledgement of the past but also a perseverance to keep on going. Don’t want to get that deep on a Tuesday morning? That’s fine. “rockville winters build character” from Stoke Signals is a band that, if you just want to listen to it, you can and you will enjoy every second of it– I promise.
