Girl at the Rock Shows

I’ve seen The Silent Treatment perform a couple of times now and I fall deeper and deeper in love with their angst and grit every time. Their music is great but I feel like their live show is the cherry on top because you just don’t seem to get the same amount of energy and fire listening to their recordings as you do when you see them live… until now.

The Silent Treatment is releasing their new song “Devalued” this Friday at a show happening at the always lovely Cloudland. Unfortunately, I already double booked myself for Friday and won’t make it to the show. What a freaking shame because not only is the line-up for this show sick (The Stress of Her Regard and The Mood Swings will be performing alongside The Silent Treatment”), so is this single.

“Devalued” isn’t just another single, it’s a rally cry and anthem for all of us who are grinding away in the music scene without a lot to show for it. Although this song is super short at just under two minutes, it packs a punch and gives you the kind of motivation and drive you need to keep going while also acknowledging that things aren’t great. This could apply to a lot of different things in everyday life whether it’s family, relationships, jobs, or whatever but, for me and for The Silent Treatment, this song is about how sick we all are of doing all this work and putting all of our time into our passion projects but, again, not getting anything back in return. “Devalued” was inspired by a bunch of Twin Cities musicians standing up and refusing to play city-sponsored music events for “exposure” rather than the payment we all truly deserve. This song is tongue-in-cheek. It’s angsty in the perfect way that The Silent Treatment always adds a sharp tongue and a sense of grit behind everything they do but, more importantly than all of that, this anthem carries a very important message and I love the fact that The Silent Treatment is taking a stand by releasing this truly stellar track.
