Is it possible that I work better off of fewer hours of sleep? I don’t know what it is but I got very little sleep this weekend but, for a Monday morning, I’m feeling pretty good and energized. I don’t want to jinx it as I’m sure there’s going to be an epic crash in the near future for me but, for now, I’m just going to enjoy it and continue to get things done and fuel my soul by checking out new music starting with “Harddown” from Oh Dang.
“Harddown” is raw. There’s no other way to put it. First, the band hits you with raw emotion as they set the scene for this song. It starts off slow and hollow but, within the first minute, you get a real taste for just how perfect this band can be. They take all of the best elements of 90s grunge and mix it with something a bit more fresh and timely somehow. It’s a great tone and a great vibe but that’s not what struck me about this song. What really got me hooked was that raw vulnerability that can be felt throughout the track. There are times throughout this four and a half minute song with that feeling comes through loud and clear in moments where the vocals have a very heartbreaking tone to them. The rest of this song has an insane amount of power but, if you listen carefully, you realize that every strum of the guitar and hit of the drums has that same raw emotion quality. You can tell that this song means the world to Oh Dang and, more so, that music in general means the world to this band giving “Harddown” that extra little sparkle that really makes it stand out.
