I’ve been doing interviews a lot lately. It’s seriously just so fun to get to know bands on a deeper and more personal level. Even though I know my questions are unconventional and probably have the music geeks cringing because they would rather talk about gear or song structure than hobbies and coffee orders, it seriously just adds a personality to a band which, in turn, adds a new side to their music.
This latest interview is with The Missing Peace and it very well maybe my favorite thus far. These guys randomly messaged me on Instagram but I fell in love when I heard their music and continued to fall head over heels as I read their answers to my questions…
Pick between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, or Parks & Rec
Oh, the Office is 100% the superior show. Not one bad episode and the roles were cast PERFECTLY.
Now that you’ve picked, please assign each band member as a character from said show
Oh God, they’re going to hate me for this, but Luke is Dwight cause he’s always so anal about things, he’s also the funniest when he’s unintentionally funny. Lazarus is probably Andy because the way Andy raves nonstop about Cornell is the same way Laz constantly brings up being in a frat at the University of Arizona. Also, it stays true to the comparison because, in the show, Dwight steals Andy’s girlfriend, Angela, which lines up to real-life pretty accurately I’d say. sorry boys. Lastly, I’d (Nico) probably be Michael, because I make stupid puns/skits and dad jokes all the time and I’m not afraid to be cringe. I also give shit to Luke all the time which plays on the Michael – Dwight dynamic.
Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?
Minneapolis people are just overall better than others. I’m just assuming, cuz we’ve never been there. My mom says that she used to live in Minneapolis but I honestly have no proof that the states of Minnesota, Michigan, or Wisconsin even exist. But no it would be absolutely sick to play a show in Minneapolis, if anyone does booking up there let us know! We’re thinking about hitting up Chicago and St. Louis, definitely want to dig into our midwestern emo more. We’ll bring the high energy
What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?
Our only new hobby has been sitting in our god damn apartment either drowning in schoolwork or procrastinating by watching Gordon Ramsey yell at people. That makes us feel warm inside… lol but we really miss going out and seeing people. ugh, our brains are rotting.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
I think a solid consensus between the boys is that coffee kinda sucks. If we HAD to pick, we’d go for function over taste, meaning the nitro cold brew with extra caffeine would be the way to go. And no, a Frappuccino with caramel and extra cream is NOT coffee, you’re just drinking flavored milk at that point.
Are you okay with unconventional interview questions? (too late!)
That’s the only format of interviews we’ll agree to from now on haha.
If you could compare yourself to an animal, what would it be and why?
Luke: I’d say I definitely identify more with inanimate objects… like a spaghetti strainer… so carefree, just chilling, ready to strain that pasta. Feel the warm water course through your body. I don’t know, maybe not. I guess a dog.
Laz: I’d be a lion. I feel like they’re really my spirit animal. So much so that I got one tattooed on my chest. I think it’s because of The Lion King and Power Rangers: Jungle Fury. I idolized the Red Ranger and his Megazord was a lion. Also, lions sleep for most of the day and hunt at night which is pretty chill.
Did Matt Skiba help or hurt Blink 182? Or, if you have no opinion, that’s fine too (although I’ll absolutely be judging you)!
Not the biggest fans of Blink here, but I will say that Matt Skiba is technically the better singer and that’s all I’ll give him. All of Blink’s best songs were with Tom and it’s not even close. All of the classics that made Blink as legendary to pop-punk as they are are because of Tom and his sound with the band. With that being said, I don’t think Matt hurt the band at all, as their sound is not defined by just the singer.
Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!)
To be completely honest with you, it’s got to be the lyrics from our song, “costume party, pt 2”.
“I clench my fists, I have no metaphors to gift, cause to you there’s no comparison. To me you’re a home, but to him you’re just the Sheraton, I’m enduring nights alone, while you have a bed to share with him”
“I can visualize a kite, distant yet present
On an invisible rope, I’m holding tight”
When Nick wrote that, I feel like he was the most emotionally aware and creatively driven that he’s felt in his life. He used metaphors and imagery to describe a tragic and true “love” story that his young and immature self saw as a defining point in his life, yet at the same time, it can apply to anyone. The lyrics all throughout the song describe the absurdity of romance, and a commentary of human relationships and inner struggle as we force ourselves to forget about someone we used to talk to every day.
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
Luke: I’d say Green Grass & High Tides by The Outlaws especially when it starts getting really fast, the 5 minute solo at the end! You definitely need like a 10-minute song, I mean you can’t choose some measly 4-minute song it’s at least a couple miles to our safe house.
Laz: Well it has to be something very high energy so, naturally, I have to go with Hometown by Cleopatrick
What’s your most regrettable tattoo? Or, if you don’t have any- what’s a tattoo you would want if you were to get one but know you’d instantly regret it?
Laz: Most regrettable tattoo? I don’t regret any of my tattoos but if I had to take one away it would be the XO on my ankle only because I gave it to myself while I was drunk and didn’t really use enough ink. The result looks more like a dark scar than a stick n poke. Still, no regrets
Favorite method of listening to music (i.e. vinyl, cassette, 8-track, etc.)
100000% vinyl. As the owners of 2 vinyl players, I think we’d agree that the vinyl experience provides a collectors sort of satisfaction. Songs with especially good album art act as portraits sitting on the shelf with the player itself bringing forth a vintage aesthetic bringing us back to a time we’ve never been to. We hope to get to a point where vinyl becomes easily manufactured and accessible to us because we’d love to have all of our future discography pressed!
What’s one thing I should know before listening to ‘Garage’?
It’s meant to be fun, high energy, and best enjoyed with a group of friends, dancing and partying the night away…
I can absolutely assure the guys of The Missing Peace that Minneapolis is, in fact, a real place and that using their own lyrics as the answer to the “favorite lyrics of all time” question is absolutely a flex (that I totally respect!). I can also absolutely assure you that these guys are fun and their music shows that.
Still not convinced that these guys are worth your time? First off, shame on you, second– check out this video of “DIDURDIKLY” from ‘Garage’.
