An Interview with SYNS

SYNS’ new single “Speak The Same” instantly stood out to me. It’s not only the way it sounds, but also the way ithe video looks. Something about this SYNS character had me intrigued and I just had to get to know him a little bit better so I jumped on the opportunity to do an interview. I feel like I should be offended that SYNS called my questions “beautifully odd” but, let’s be honest, that’s exactly what they are. So, without further delay, here’s my interview with the one and only SYNS!

What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?

During the lockdown I was finally able to pursue two of my lifelong ambitions: screen printing and bread baking. Both hobbies allow me to create beautiful artifacts, the one being bread and the other printed fabric. So much fun.

What’s your go-to coffee order?

I am ristretto or espresso kind of guy. I like my coffee feisty. Currently I drink coffee by De Zeeuwse Branding, a local brand.

What’s your favorite topping(s) on pizza?

As addition to the bread hobby, pizza is also an all time DIY classic! Even when I have all the possibilities in the world… I keep coming back to the jalapeño.

Did Matt Skiba help or hurt Blink 182? Or, if you have no opinion, that’s fine too (although I’ll absolutely be judging you)!

Mark Hoppus is my favourite Beatle, but I can’t ignore that Tom Delonge will be missed. We should give Matt Skiba some credits, we did put the Alkaline in Alkaline Trio.

Are you okay with unconventional interview questions? (too late!)

Unacceptable. You will hear from my lawyer.

Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!)

Around The World by Daft Punk and Trans-Europe Express by Kraftwerk both did a lot for me. To be honest I am not too focused on lyrics, I keep getting distracted by the music. It is often at karaoke that I finally ‘hear’ what is going on.

If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?

That must be ‘Exit Music (For A Film)’ by Radiohead. I don’t see myself surviving being on the run from armed policemen. I think the climax of the Radiohead would fit the mood of my demise as my heart gets greeted by the racing bullets of the folks trying to stop me. Great lyrics too, I did notice those. “Today we escape.” Lol nope. Would you sing me a song?

What’s the first thing you will do when the world is back to normal? (come on– don’t just say play a show, we all want that)

Definitely not play a show! I would like to see some shows first and cross some borders.

If you could compare yourself to an animal, what would it be and why?

I don’t know of I know myself well enough to say what kind of human I am yet. However, ever since I started making music I dreamt of building a small studio called ‘Chameleon Cave’, where all kinds of genres could be produced. Although I can not change my appearance in a matter of seconds, I’ll pick the chameleon for now.

What’s your most regretable tattoo? Or, if you don’t have any- what’s a tattoo you would want if you were to get one?

No regrets. I do have a tattoo of a pair of scissors which was part of a contest of inked-rock-paper-scissors, which most people expected me to get sick of… But it did allow me to win, so I have only grown more fond of it over time.

Favorite method of listening to music (i.e. vinyl, cassette, 8-track, etc.)

I love what musicians can bring to the table when they record music in a studio. Live music is amazing, but playing a record allows you to hear what an artist would do if they had all the possibilities of the world. As of carrier, I like my vinyl player, but hear the most details when I listen to digital files on one of my pairs of headphones. Old disco records on vinyl and audiophile stuff on my headphones.
