I was instantly drawn to Madysin when I opened an email from her and took a listen to her new song “Wild & Strange”. She has an attitude and style that I instantly felt drawn to but there was also something honest and real about her that had me intrigued. I wanted to get to know this amazing woman a bit more so I asked her some questions! Here’s my full interview with the beautiful and talented Madysin Hatter!
What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?
During the pandemic, I taught myself how to use Final Cut Pro (and a slew of other editing/animation apps) to put together the lyric video for my new song “Wild & Strange (ft. Tyler Bryant, Frank Ferrer, Rob Bailey, & Brett Bass)”. Also edited some live performances of mine from pre-pandemic. Check them out at http://www.youtube.com/user/madysinhatter Aside from that, I’ve been reading a ton and gotten really into Stephen King novels. I guess the next step is to binge-watch “Castle Rock”!
What’s an old school fad that you wish would come back?
JNCO jeans for sure! Butterfly clips, yes. Holographic combat boots, smiley face everything. Never thought I’d say this, but if it’s the nineties, I’m here for it. Delia’s— where are you?!
Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?
Feeling a lot of love for the people of Minneapolis right now. Been weighing heavily on my mind, as I’m sure it has for everyone.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
Black coffee, as strong as humanly possible. Lots of it.
Are you okay with unconventional interview questions?
Love them! Shakes it up a bit.
Did Matt Skiba help or hurt Blink 182? Or, if you have no opinion, that’s fine too (although I’ll absolutely be judging you)!
I can’t speak on Matt Skiba’s role specifically, but I think generally, with most bands, it’s important to honor and support the tough choices that come with a band’s evolution.
What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on?
Oh boy.
If you could compare yourself to a bird, what bird would it be and why?
A peacock, because the feathered tail is just so colorful and wild and extra. All that’s missing is glitter.
Favorite lyrics of all time?
I love Aerosmith lyrics. Steven Tyler is the king of double entendres and I really dig that. Great examples are various lines from “Head First”, “F.I.N.E”, “Walk On The Water”, and the list goes on and on and on. “Dream On” by Aerosmith is my favorite song of all time, so I guess you could count all those lyrics as my favorite lyrics of all time. As far as Non-Aerosmith favorite lyrics go…don’t know if it would be my favorite “of all time”, but I love AC/DC’s line “I’m as cool as a body on ice” from their song “Live Wire”. Just really cool, simple, unique, crystal clear imagery. I love lyrics. I love how a single line of text can telepathically paint an entire picture for the receiver.
What’s your favorite menu item at Taco Bell?
Chipotle.
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
“What Do You Do for Money Honey” by AC/DC. Lots of screeching tires, sharp turns, fast edits, and almost-getting-caughts. Then, once we get outta the hectic-ness of the city and we’re crusin’ the desert with the top down and no worries, “Take the Money and Crawl” by Green Day. A trail of loose bills fly out the back of the car, but we’re driving into the setting sun and having fun, so the money blowing away doesn’t even matter. Lots of aerial shots. Prior to robbing the bank, while we prepare and get in the right frame of mind, “Remember To Breathe” by Sturgill Simpson.
What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Wild & Strange”?
It’s about unleashing yourself and celebrating your primal inner wild. Do what makes you feel alive! Embrace your strangeness, it’s in all of us. Most importantly, do what makes you happy without caring what anyone else thinks!
Although I feel like she really skirted around the Blink 182 question and her answer about Chipotle being better than Taco Bell left me feeling a bit offended, I had so much fun with Madysin on this interview and it really made me fall even more for her and her infectious energy. Make sure to check out Madysin’s new song “Wild & Strange” and show her some love on social media!
