Don’t worry guys- I’m still alive. That second vaccine shot is no joke and after sleeping for what felt like days, I’m finally getting back to my normal self. I won’t lie, I enjoyed having a few days without writing but I missed having new music to listen to as I drifted in and out of sleep so I’m excited to get back on track starting today and am so ready to find some new tunes so let’s start with this quick new EP from Wouldn’t Say.

‘Nothing Wrong with Simple Songs’ starts with “Dead Dynamic” that, although a simple song as the title of this three-song EP would suggest, packs a punch. The vocals instantly reminded me of all of the bands that I seem to put on repeat when I don’t know what else to listen to like Banner Pilot and Arms Aloft. There’s a raw honesty that comes through with the vocals while the pop-punk instrumentation keeps the track from going too dark or emotional. Honestly, this is just one of those feel-good songs that instantly gave me the motivation I needed for my Saturday to be a productive one.

Whereas I found “Dead Dynamic” to be fairly rocking, something more tender takes over for “Old Dogs” which I found completely addicting. The vocals and instrumentation style are the same so the stark shift in mood caught me a bit off guard but I loved it. About halfway through, there’s a dizzying guitar part that, again, caught me a bit off guard but in all of the right ways. Although these are, when you cut them down, simple songs, there are intricacies scattered throughout that really make you stop and listen. I could already tell that three songs just weren’t going to be enough for me and I instantly dreaded the fact that the next song would be the last I get right now from Wouldn’t Say.’

“Dismantle Home” closes out this quick sampler from Wouldn’t Say with a vibe much closer to that of “Dead Dynamic” while bringing out a bit more of an edge. There’s almost a southern twang to the guitar work in this track that I absolutely loved and instantly wished I had heard more of on the previous tracks. An almost dark and daunting track, I adored how each one of these three songs showed a different side of this highly versatile band while still making sure you got the overall vibe that is Wouldn’t Say. I was so busy trying to figure out how to describe this final track that as soon as I placed my hands over my keyboard again, it was done and I was left with just the sound of dishwasher cleaning away.

My love-hate relationship with super short EP’s and releases continues. I loved that Wouldn’t Say was able to lay so much out in just three songs but now I find myself wanting so much more from this band. Regardless, what a great release to help me jump back into my normal pattern of checking out far too much new music for anyone to really keep up with.
