It sometimes bugs me when a band pitches a single to me saying that it’s a “song with a lot of heart” or anything like that. The fact is, I’ll be the judge of how much heart is in a track and I feel like a lot of bands just kind of throw that phase around when, to me, it means everything. I almost didn’t give “Clarity” from The Scarlet Son a chance because of this comment on the pitch but, honestly, they got it right. The amount of heart in this track is deafening.
Right off the bat, the easy comparison to make here is Coheed & Cambria. You can hear and feel that influence instantly before the band moves into a sound that can only be described as The Scarlet Son. Sure, that Coheed influence continues throughout this four minute track but you also get a little Thrice post-punk vibe and even a little Foals indie-rock sprinkles in there. overall, this is a catchy song that had my at the edge of my seat throughout the entirety but, more importantly, it sparked a fire in me. You can hear that this band is fighting for something. What that thing is doesn’t matter. It’s that fight, that power, that heart that had me sold. “Clarity” isn’t a new song as it came out eight years ago but The Scarlet Son is a new name to me nonetheless so please excuse me while I dig into more from this truly amazing band.
