Girl at the Rock Shows

It’s a Saturday, and instead of just laying around like I typically do on the weekends as I regroup from a busy week and prepare for another one, I’ve chained myself to my desk. I need to get some stuff done and need to get caught up on the mess that is my desk, yet I’m finding it hard to concentrate, so let’s feed two birds with one seed. Reviewing some new music will not only give me the sense of solace and peace that I need right now but will also help me with cleaning off this mess of a desk, so let’s dig into the first one of the day and check out ‘Sick Lie. EP 1622’ from Madisine.

This EP kicks off with a quick thirty-eight-second intro. It’s a beautiful start to the album, with slow and steady waves of sound crashing around you. I love how this intro seeps so flawlessly into the album’s first “true” track, “Sick Lie.” You can feel those waves crash and burn throughout “Sick Lie,” but you also get your first taste of Madisine’s flawless alternative rock sound. I know that sounds so generic- alternative rock- but don’t let that fool you. Madisine’s voice instantly hooked me. It’s smooth, but it has this grungy aspect to it that will draw your ears in close and steal your heart. The dynamic energy behind every word is easy to hear but, more importantly, easy to feel. There’s swagger, there’s heart, and there’s a slightly infectious vibe about “Sick Lie,” which had me already dreading the end of this all-too-quick twenty-minute EP.

I love how words and themes from “Sick Lie” continue to pop in and out as “Liar” takes over this album. I won’t give it away, but a couple of lines from “Sick Lie” stick out due to the amount of pure emotion attached to them, and it really leans into “Liar” in such a perfect way. “Liar” is a bit more somber, a bit less rockin’ than “Sick Lie,” but again, I was utterly captured by Madisine’s vocals in this track. I feel like you really feel the weight of the words in this song, making “Liar” one of those songs where it’s just so easy to get lost in your own head and thoughts. Although that’s not quite the vibe I want with my Saturday, as I’m trying to stay positive and upbeat, there’s no denying the talent showcased in this track.

Although another relatively somber song, “Live with it” has a super cool edge behind it. As the title may lead you to think, there’s something almost snarky about the attitude in this song. It’s one of those “I told you so” kinds of attitudes, and I love the way it comes through in this song. It’s bitter but, again, full of Madisine’s signature brand of emotion and heart. Add some super stellar guitar playing and steady and powerful drums and you are left with a stand out track that will both get stuck in your head and leave you wanting so much more from Madisine. If you only have a few free minutes, I suggest you listen to this song.

The beauty within ‘Let Go’ has left me speechless, even after multiple listens. This more somber singer-songwriter vibe wasn’t what I thought I wanted for my Saturday, but this song, in particular, hit me so hard and so well. Madisine’s vocals in this song really stood out to me as comforting. This is one of those songs to listen to when you’re having a particularly hard day and you just need someone to remind you to just ‘let go’ of what’s bothering you. With my current drama of losing all of my socials and having to rebuild, Madisine’s voice reminding me to just ‘let go’ was exactly what I needed to help me power through what feels like my first day of not being completely numb.

‘Sick Lie. EP 1622’ closes out with “My Truth”. This song features this smooth and beautiful sense of desperation in Madisine’s voice. Okay, maybe desperation isn’t quite the right word, but you can feel Madisine trying to convey this feeling of wanting people to know “My Truth,” and it turns into a stunningly lovely track that, again, will have you caught in all of the feelings. The composition in this track felt particularly interesting to me. There are your typical rises and falls that come with a more somber, heart-felt track, but I feel like they, at times, caught me off guard. The song didn’t move quite the way I thought it would, and I loved it for that.

Overall, ‘Sick Lie. EP 1622′ may not be the most rockin’ or the loudest thing you play all day, but it’s an EP that will stand out to you. The sheer amount of passion and heart that Madisine infuses into every beat throughout this six-track EP is undeniable. It’s an emotional and passionate journey that will leave you feeling connected and moved.
