I feel so bad. Local act Portside Dive has invited me out to many a show but, every time, something seems to come up. Whether it’s a personal thing or just a larger-than-life show popping up that I could not say no to, I feel terrible and feel even worse now that I’ve spent some time with his single “Trying So Hard”.

Portside Dive is the solo project of Minnesota-based Matt Reed. You can hear almost instantly that his roots are in the early 2000s pop-punk scene which definitely made it an instant favorite of mine but there’s more to this song than just that. Sure, there’s a huge nostalgia factor at play here but the amount of passion and emotion that Matt packs into every single beat of this ridiculously catchy and anthemic bop is what really makes you fall in love with Portside Dive. As the song title may lead you to believe, there’s a sense of desperation in this song and I love how Matt is able to put that in this track without taking away from the bopiness of it. If you’re local to the Twin Cities, make sure to catch Portside Dive live soon. I know that I will and I promise to never have an excuse as to why I can’t make it again. “Trying So Hard” is one of those songs that begs to be experienced live and I am counting down the day until I can do just that.
