I honestly hate the cover photo for “Eyelids” from Heavy Sweater. It’s triggering for me and, as a lover of all animals (except for snakes a spiders but that’s a whole other thing), it just really turned me off from this song. That being said, something in my gut told me to just close my eyes and ignore the cover photo while letting this song play. I love it when my gut is right.

The first song off of Heavy Sweater’s debut album, “Eyelids” is that perfect modern power pop meets pop punk vibe that seems to be all the rage these days. There are definitely glimpses into an emo world of years gone by which spoke to my nostalgia seeking soul but, really, this track came off as fresh and fun. With moments throughout this song that reminded me a little bit of everything from PUP to Vundabar, I loved that Heavy Sweater was able to keep me on my toes throughout this three minute song while making sure the song had this perfect flow to it. In the pitch I got for this song, it’s mentioned that the production quality of this song (done by Alex Edkins of METZ) was meant to capture the intensity of their live performance yet still have something polished about it. It sounds like a tall task to land but Heavy Sweater absolutely did that and I hope that this Toronto band makes the trek to the Twin Cities soon!
