Daylight Savings is stupid. I know we are all feeling it, and I know that it gets a bit cliche to talk about, but I’m feeling it today, and I’m just beyond exhausted. Part of it is my fault. I didn’t need to stay up until the wee hours of the morning, but here we are– exhausted, crabby, and feeling burnt out even though I had last night off. I need a song to jumpstart my energy level and Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards’ new song “Already Over (Smile Honey)” is doing the trick.

The sound of Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards is a unique and fun one. It’s part jazz, part alt-rock, part emo, and all theatrics. Although “Already Over (Smile Honey)” is a bit more low key than I typically go for, there’s an infectious energy that reigns supreme throughout this three and a half minute song that makes it a true stunner. The vocals have an almost musical theatre quality to them giving this song a slight sense of drama but the instrumentation makes it an accessible and memorable jam. There are moments of this song that reminded me a bit of Weezer and others that had a bit more of a subtle Will Wood tone to them. On top of all of this, “Already Over (Smile Honey)” has a beautiful message behind it. It’s a song about that face you put on in front of your friends and family. That mask that says everything is okay and you’re fine with whatever because, at the end of the day, it’s just easier that way and why upset the balance? At the same time, it’s a mask that you take off when you lie down at night, and you finally have a chance to just be yourself. This song reminds you that you are not alone when you take that mask off and subtly suggests that maybe masks aren’t worth the time and energy when it’s all said and done.
