Although a transplant, I am a Minnesota girl through and through at this point so, of course, I chuckled out loud at the title of this new track from Heavy Lag. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to being at a random show and seeing Greg Norton of Hüsker Dü fame wandering around but that’s just how my life is these days. Yeah, Heavy Lag snagged me because of the name of this single but it quickly became a favorite of mine for many more reasons.
One of those reasons is the tone of this song. “Husker Don’t” has a very garage-punk tone to it. It’s crispy and crunchy with a raw edge behind it giving it an old-school vibe but with a new-school twist. It feels very Dillinger Four but it’s also so much more than that. “Husker Don’t” is a song about “navigating an existential and economic crisis, one weird day at a time” and, truthfully, that’s something we can all relate to. Although a bit of a heavy topic, Heavy Lag has turned it into an infectious bop with this fast-moving song. It’s relentless and a satisfying blend of sparkling guitars and heavy hitting drums. When you add the almost grunge-feeling but punk-leaning vocals, you are left with an unforgettable single that will surely get stuck in your head. Yeah, come for the quirky song title but “Husker Don’t” from Heavy Lag will quickly become a staple in your daily playlists if you give it a chance.
