Checking out new music from all over the world is great but I find the biggest thrill when checking out new music from local bands. I love getting my eyes opened to new-t0-me bands in the Twin Cities but also love little reminders of all of the amazing bands that have been around the scene for some time and Portside Dive is one of those bands. Although they have been around for a hot minute, I have only had one chance to see them live but, after hearing their new track “Different Kind Of Me,” it’s obvious that I will have to change that sooner rather than later.
Let’s look past the fact that the guitar solo in this song was written and played by the guitarist from All American Rejects, “Different Kind Of Me” is a brilliant song that shows so many sides of this local band. It’s definitely rooted in a pop-punk vibe but you get everything from a more alt-rock inspired energy to a more tender almost emo-leaning ambiance at times. All of these things come together and make this song one that feel like it has a lot of depth but also makes you just want to bounce around a little bit due to the infectious energy that radiates from every beat. As frontman Matt Reed says, “This is your pep-talk in pop-punk form—perfect for lifting your spirits (and your fists!).” Come on, what more could you ask for on a cloudy Thursday?
