I feel like people underestimate when they pitch a song to me calling it”weird.” I like weird and, at this point in my musical journal, nothing really surprises me anymore. Sure, I may hear something that sounds different and like a cool combination of familiar things but I rarely call something “odd” or “weird” so when Greg Sgammato sent me his new song “This Is Hell” marking it as “weird,” I rolled my eyes a little bit. That being said, I was excited to jump into this song.

The song starts off country-inspired but quickly transitions into a more surf-rock groove, complete with, as Greg calls them, “punk rock jump-scares.” Add in Greg’s tongue-in-cheek and often quirky lyrics and you are left with a truly innovative song. Personally, I wouldn’t call this “weird”; rather, more quirky than anything else. But I can see where someone might get that impression from this song. The composition is all over the place, much like the influences that make up this song. I found this to create such an exciting journey and one that had me hanging on every word that Greg was singing throughout the three and a half minute song. “This Is Hell” is from Greg’s album, ‘Et cetera’ so, if you like what you hear here (which I think you will), make sure to dig into some of Greg’s other material out there.
