Spending more time on new music is honestly the only thing that feels right right now so, instead of trying to dig for an intro that expands on what I said in my last post, let’s just dive right into “You Were The Sun” from Woke Up Older.
The first thing that really hooked me about this three-minute-long song is the sense of desperation, urgency, and straight-up emotion that comes dripping from every beat right off the bat. Woke Up Older doesn’t hold back and instantly shows you their heart on their sleeve. The emotional element of this song (and the vocal style) definitely reminds me of The Wonder Years, but there’s something slightly more aggressive about the instrumentation that stops me short of calling them just a rehashed Wonder Years kind of band. As if the power and catchiness of this song weren’t enough, the vocals turn into a bit of a spoken word kind of thing about halfway through this song. As someone who still loves bands like Hotel Books and Being As An Ocean, this part, in particular, hit me super hard and not only made my heart flutter, but made me smile. “You Were The Sun” is going to hit you, and it’s going to hit hard.
