Girl at the Rock Shows

Time feels like it’s almost standing still here in Minneapolis right now. It’s been a tragic and weird past twenty-four hours with many mass shootings, including one this morning at a school. My heart is broken for everyone directly affected by these events and this city as a whole. I’m doing my best not to doomscroll into the abyss when it comes to everything going on, because, at the end of the day, this seems to be, unfortunately, just part of life these days, so I need a little distraction. I promise I am not continuing to post today to be insensitive; it’s more for my mental health because, on a day like today, it would be so easy to get lost in the dread and darkness that is plaguing this world and, specifically, the community I call home. Here’s to hoping that checking out Teenage Joans’ “My Heart’s Dead!” gives me a little bit of relief if only for a couple of minutes.

Teenage Joans has been around since 2018, but this is the first I’m hearing of them. I hate the fact that it took me so long to “discover” this band, but I am so stoked that they are in my life now. “My Heart’s Dead!” is an instant classic pop-punk kind of jam. It’s incredible to me that this duo is able to put so much energy and sound into this track, considering it’s just two of them. “My Heart’s Dead!” hits you with a full-band kind of sound and energy that is nothing short of electric. The lyrics of this song follow your typical pop-punk kind of love and love lost story. The overall sound follows the classic pop-punk composition, yet something about this song really resonated with me. Maybe it’s that aforementioned power, maybe it’s just the brightness that this song brought to my darkened day; either way, I cannot thank Teenage Joans enough for “My Heart’s Dead!” and the deep dive that I plan on taking into their other material for the rest of the day.
