I love tracks that tell a story. I know that every song tells some sort of story but there are some where the tales told are just a bit more epic and engaging than others. “Sanatorium (The Wedding)” from To Tell You The Truth is one of those songs.
This song is the first single from To Tell You The Truth’s new album ‘Current Tales From a Past Life.’ Although it’s only three and a half minutes long, the storytelling in this track is insane. Come on now, you know I’m not going to give it away, but, truly, as you’re listening through this song, try your best not to get lost in the brilliant instrumentation and really pay attention to the words. I know it’s difficult. Not only are the words beautiful and epic, but so is the instrumentation happening beneath them. Stylistically, this song is a bit all over the place. It starts off super smooth and almost calm but, as the track and the story moves along, you start to get more and more angst and the song starts to lean into a bit more of a pop-punk leaning post-hardcore kind of jam. There were moments of this song that reminded me of Mae, others that had an almost ‘Black Parade’ kind of vibe, and others where I was just lost for any kind of comparison but that’s the magic of this song and To Tell The Truth in general.
