Girl at the Rock Shows

I absolutely hate spiders. I know that that’s nothing super unique or anything like that, but even the name of this track had me shuddering in disgust a bit, but as soon as I hit play on this song from Funhouse Mirrors, I was able to look past the title. Sure, I can’t stand looking at the artwork of this song and would never actually “Summon The Spider,” but there’s no denying that this is a killer song that is absolutely worth your attention.

I know, I hate spiders a lot, so me liking this song about a giant spider causing a nuclear holocaust seems a bit like a contradiction, but, really, this song is irresistible. It’s as dramatic as it is epic and definitely has more than enough power to both knock you on your ass and help you get through a sleepy morning at the same time. It’s four and a half minutes long, which, in the grand scheme of music, really isn’t that long, but something about the way this song feels laid out makes it feel so much longer than that (in a good way). You get a full story here and a cinematic style of drama that makes me wish there was a music video for this track (but one where the spider was replaced by a unicorn or something a bit more charming). Think dark Panic at the Disco with an almost Dresden Doll styled flare, and you can get kind of close to this song, but, really, this song shows that Funhouse Mirrors are in a world all of their own, and it’s a world I hope to visit again soon.
