Isn’t it so weird when certain words or phrases bring something completely random to mind? Like right now, I’m getting ready to check out “Split Lip” from Lavish Youth, but instantly got “Fat Lip” from Sum 41 stuck in my head. I know these are two different things, “Split Lip” and “Fat Lip,” yet, here I am ready to storm through the office like my name was El Niño. Okay, I’m stretching ever so slightly for an intro this yet again but, truly, this track from Lavish Youth needs no introduction.

Much like it needs no introduction, luckily, “Split Lip” needs no background (because they didn’t give me anything). This song stands alone on the power that comes with Lavish Youth. It’s a very PUP-styled DIY-vibing pop-punk sound, but there’s something almost The Front Bottoms’ heart-on-sleeve style when it comes to some of the words (and I mean both the lyrics and the delivery of said lyrics). This creates a blend of genres that is absolutely fun and catchy but also honest and raw. This is the kind of song that makes you feel seen and, if you’re having a rough day, can absolutely act as that shoulder to lean on. If you’re having a great day, this is the kind of song to play loud and proud at a pool. There’s something about the energy of it that just screams sunshine, cold drinks, and massive cannonballs into a clear and crisp pool. Regardless of how you choose to enjoy “Split Lip” from Lavish Youth, you will surely fall in love with this song and band alike.
