I try to be non-biased when it comes to my reviews, but when a band like Boys Night Out comes across my desk, it’s hard. This band is one of those early 2000s bands that helped me through a super rough time. It’s not that I won’t say anything bad about them if a sound sucks, but more that I will feel guilty and probably try to sugarcoat it. Thankfully, their new song “100% Ghosts” doesn’t need any sugarcoating. It doesn’t need me lying about how good it is when, really, it’s a crap track; it stands on its own, and, Boys Night Out fan or not, you will surely love this song if you give it a chance.
In true Boys Night Out fashion, “100% Ghosts” is a song that blends an insane amount of power and angst with something more raw and vulnerable. It’s a cathartic kind of song that will make you feel everything and nothing at all, all at the same time. I love how not only are there two sides (soft and heavy) in this song, but there also seem to be two full stories contained within this three-and-a-half-minute-long song. The first half feels almost scared and eerie. There’s tension building that you can not only hear, but also feel. It’s as if the song is ramping up to something, and that something is the beautifully triumphant “second story”. The second half of this song hits with a bit more angst and a bit more power. The vocals turn a bit more shouted, and the instrumentation feels a bit more chaotic (yet perfectly controlled). I can already tell I’m rambling. There’s honestly no way to put the genius of Boys Night Out into words. That’s not me showing my bias, that is me being constantly impressed by this band and their single “100% Ghosts” is no exception.
