Girl at the Rock Shows

Per usual, today is one of those days where I’m really not sure where time is going. Although I’ve been getting a lot done, I don’t understand how it is already almost 11 AM. I know that’s not super late, but when you start your day job at 7 AM, 11 AM feels like the day is half over, and I still have so much to do. I can feel myself starting to get a bit manic and panicked, and I hate that feeling, so I’m hoping that taking a break and checking out another new song may help me stay cool, calm, and collected as I continue on with this insane Monday.

Before you even hear this song, the video that comes with it showcases puppies and kittens. Naturally, I was instantly hooked, and I found a sense of comfort not only in the images but also in the sound of Bonus Room that takes over after just a couple of seconds. I instantly fell in love with the calm but energized indie-rock sound of this band. I love the way that it flows from something with an almost Americana influence to something that, at times, almost bridges into the world of bands like IDLES, if only in the intensity with which some of the notes are played. I was in love, and this song brought a smile to my face with the seemingly quirky nature of this band, but then I started to really dig in and realized that this song is not all fun and games. “Riot Gear” is actually a political statement that takes you back to 2020. Things were wild for me back then. Not only was it the beginning of the pandemic, but living in Minneapolis was a wild thing, and I spent a fair amount of time pounding the pavement. I love how this song took me back there, but shone a light on the events rather than shrouding them in darkness. There’s tension, but there’s creativity here. There are bold patterns, but there’s comfort and familiarity. If 2020 were to be remembered in the form of a song, I think that “Riot Gear” from Bonus Room would be in the running for that song.
